Bideford Petty Sessions

Tuesday, 12th June 1866


Thursday, before the Mayor (F. R. Lee, Esq.), and W. Ackland, Esq., M.D.

Breach of the bye laws. W. Stanley a licensed hawker, was summoned by Supt. Vanstone, for obstructing the thoroughfare in Mill St. on Wednesday last. The defendant did not appear.

The Superintendent deposed that defendant allowed his large van with goods to remain in Mill-street, opposite the 'Union Inn' for several hours on the day in question. Later in the day defendant took his van East-the-Water, where he again allowed to remain in the street several hours, while he was in a public house drinking.

Fined £1 and costs.

Defendant left the town on Wednesday evening, but on Thursday, the Superintendant of Police went in pursuit of him and overtook him in a bye lane on the Barnstaple road, where defendant paid the fine and costs.
