The Gipsy Escape

Thursday, 16th June 1859

Wm. Ling, publican, Colchester, v Ambrose Smith, a Gipsy horse-dealer - Action for 19s. 3d. for board and lodging during last October fair.

He was described in the summons as of Colchester, and was served with it when in the market, which he occasionally visits.

The Court held that as the man's residence was not known there was no jurisdiction, and the plaintiff was nonsuited. The defendant had, when asked for the money, told plaintiff that his residence must be found out before he could be summoned.
