Public Notice

Saturday, 8th November 1817

At the last General Quarter Session for the county of Norfolk, holden on Tuesday the 21st ult. the following excellent resolution was carried unanimously against those wandering tribes, called Gypsies, that infest that neighbourhood, viz, -

"That the Clerk of the Peace do give public Notice in the Newspapers circulated within the County of Norfolk, that all persons pretending to be Gypsies, or wandering in the habit or form of Egyptians, are by law deemed to be rogues and vagabonds, and are punishable by imprisonment and whipping; - And the Chief Constables in their respective Hundreds, and the Petty Constables in their respective Parishes, are required to put the laws in execution, by apprehending such Gypsies, or pretended Gypsies, and to carry them before some of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace acting in and for the said county, in order that they may be dealt with according to the law."

We hope that the Magistrates of this and other counties will also take similar steps in order to extirpate a race that has no visible means of subsistence, and consequently must, for the most part, live on rapine and plunder.
