Blackheath Fire

Thursday, 25th July 1793

Yesterday morning some Gipsies, whether from accident or design we know not, set fire to the furze upon Blackheath, which, from the very driness of the weather, burnt with great fury. The whole heath was quickly enveloped in a cloud of smoke.

A number of fire-engines went from town and the crowd of people that flocked down to see the fire was immense. It was extinguished without doing any material damage.
